Wool4Health – European Wool for Health and Well-being
Abenaia is a community-rooted agroecological initiative based in the woods of São Mamede Natural Park in Marvão (Portugal).
Working with Portuguese Merino wool, the project seeks to restore the value of wool, beginning at the local scale and reconnecting production with landscape and tradition.
To support sustainable sheep farming and improve animal welfare, Abenaia offers a fair price directly to local shepherds.
The highest quality wool is spun is selected during sheep shearing and is spun in the nearest mill, resulting in a woolen spun yarn that is non-superwash, unbleached, and free from silicone based softeners.
Back at the Abenaia workshop, the yarn is dyed using natural pigments, avoiding chemical pollutants and maintaining a low environmental impact.
